When they want to communicate with students, information technology offices head to where the students are: social media.
The offices have become more than just help desks; as trends like cloud and mobile computing take root, IT departments are increasingly at the core of university operations.

A recent study (PDF download) by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), which looked at communication via social media on college campuses, revealed that Facebook and Twitter are the most popular channels. That’s not exactly surprising, but their domination is impressive. Twitter, for example, is used by 82 percent of colleges and departments.
IT departments, striving to communicate as efficiently as possible, are leveraging Twitter to engage with students. It’s a great way to send updates about outages, collect feedback and let students know about the technology opportunities on campus.
