The Modern Classroom Is Now the Cybersecurity Attack Surface
Identity gets baked right into the room too. I work with campuses where faculty tap their ID card to get into a building and then use that same card to log in to the AV system. A professor walks in, scans their college ID and their profile loads. Convenient? Sure. But the interactive panel is now part of the access control conversation. Who’s allowed to log in? What happens to their content afterward? How long does that credential stay live?
These concerns aren’t rhetorical or theoretical. Higher ed IT continues to see exploited vulnerabilities as the leading cause of ransomware attacks, at 35%, according to a Sophos survey. Unknown security gaps were the most commonly perceived organizational root cause, at 49%, for higher education institutions.
AI and Compliance Are Raising the Bar for Digital Safety
Artificial intelligence has made those questions more pressing. If a classful of students fires up AI tools on their laptops or smartphones all at once, the network must be able to handle that traffic. And whatever those tools are doing with student data needs to be safe and compliant. Which devices are on which networks? What kind of bandwidth and latency can we guarantee? How are we protecting student data under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and other compliance mandates?

Those are network engineering questions as much security questions, and they are showing up in general-purpose classrooms now, not just in labs.
Research and lab spaces illustrate these security considerations in concrete ways. I’ve worked on projects where grant language dictates the types of cameras we can use, down to the refresh rates, the latency, video storage and what kind of physical access control is on the lab door. If the grant lasts eight years, we must think about the technology of 2034 when we’re buying it in 2026. That includes the security posture of every device we hang on a wall or put in a rack.
So, yes, on paper I’m in the classroom modernization business. But when I’m looking at a room layout now, including where the displays go, what kind of audio we use, which boards and cameras we specify, I’m also looking at a security diagram: Who taps in where, what’s talking to what, and how will this space behave when something goes wrong, not just when everything goes right.
Every Campus Has a Tie-Breaker When It Comes to Digital Safety
Higher ed institutions fall into a few categories when it comes to these questions:
Identity-driven schools have established what they want to be known for. For a journalism powerhouse such as the University of Missouri, or a broadcast school such as Syracuse University or Northwestern University, the studios, lecture halls and production classrooms that support it are part of its public face. If the cameras, control rooms and capture spaces in those buildings aren’t secure and reliable, the university isn’t just risking a bad Tuesday class, it’s risking the school’s reputation and brand.

Research and public-private campuses — including Ivy League schools, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Research Triangle schools in North Carolina — are downstream of National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health funding and hospital partnerships. These are nonnegotiable as they are written into the funding.
Comprehensive campuses have the hardest job, I think. For a campus that has 8,000 students and 40 majors that all matter equally, their decision-making can be further complicated without having a marquee program to default to. So, what breaks the tie when everything is competing for the same modernization budget?
Increasingly, it’s security, and the institutions doing this well are turning it into an advantage instead of a constraint.
What Bowie State Got Right With Cloud-Based Surveillance
Bowie State University had a fragmented infrastructure with cameras that didn’t talk to one another. Instead of asking for a tech refresh or expensive camera equipment, the IT team partnered with the university’s Department of Public Safety and pitched a unified, campuswide physical security strategy to build a modern, command-center environment: a cloud-managed platform with a single-pane-of-glass dashboard that both IT and security can access.

It cut the maintenance burden, too, as it freed the team from having to do manual software upgrades, server patches and physical troubleshooting.
When deciding what to fund in 2026, safety and security increasingly are becoming prioritized considerations. There is always a compliance piece, and that has intensified post-pandemic. Whether they are working on a large networking project or a single classroom upgrade, IT directors are prioritizing campus safety when deciding what aspects of the internal infrastructure will get upgraded for compliance and security — and rightfully so.
Once you frame classroom modernization as a security investment, the budget conversation gets a lot easier to win.
