Review: Microsoft Copilot Could Transform K–12 Education for Good

With its ability to personalize lesson plans while boosting productivity, this AI chatbot is essential for educators and staff.

“Employees want AI at work — and they won’t wait for companies to catch up.” The urgency in this statement from Microsoft and LinkedIn’s 2024 Work Trend Index Annual Report is undeniable. And with the same report indicating that 66% of leaders “wouldn’t hire someone without AI skills,” it’s clear that our students will transition into a workforce where being adept at AI is an expectation.

Enter Microsoft Copilot Chat, which is included with Microsoft A1, A3 and A5 licenses. The intuitive, flexible platform has the potential to transform K–12 education for teachers, staff and students. This version of Copilot is a large language model whose starter prompt, “ask me anything,” is fitting for a classroom environment. Microsoft 365 Copilot, the enhanced, paid version, integrates the AI assistant into other familiar Microsoft tools for a seamless experience.

As the technology director and data privacy officer for Gananda Central School District near Rochester, N.Y., I’m very interested in learning how our schools could benefit from AI. So, I leaned into what was available through Microsoft 365, our primary education platform. Microsoft Copilot Chat is available as an application within Microsoft 365, which means I did not have to navigate an unfamiliar platform, nor sift through templates to benefit from AI — I simply opened the Copilot app as I would Microsoft Word and began writing prompts. This is ideal from both an IT and instructional technology perspective, as ease of access is the first and most important barrier to overcome when implementing a new technology.

With Microsoft Copilot Chat, Educators Can Personalize Learning

For educators, Copilot is a game changer for standards-aligned lesson planning as teachers can radically reduce the amount of time they spend developing lessons. However, beyond standards alignment and learning targets, I see instructional technology integrators using Copilot to support educators in generating lesson plans that incorporate more advanced frameworks, such as Universal Design for Learning, with Microsoft Learning Accelerators to personalize learning.

Since Microsoft’s age 13-plus pilot program is underway, I don’t yet have insights to share about how the app would impact our K–12 students. However, I do know that Microsoft is gathering feedback to help guide student interactions with AI. This, paired with Copilot’s promise to deliver a secure, AI-powered chat service for K–12, creates a safe environment for students to explore.

Copilot Agents Take Productivity to the Next Level

The paid version of Microsoft 365 Copilot, which integrates the AI assistant across several Microsoft tools, could be a productivity booster for the entire school staff — from superintendents to administrative assistants and everyone in between. It allows users to summarize meetings, documents, email threads and other types of information in just minutes, instead of getting bogged down in an inbox or OneDrive.

Educators can also use Copilot Studio to push productivity to the next level by building agents. AI agents can be programmed to autonomously complete certain tasks. Imagine a schoolwide instructional initiative where educators engage in professional learning, and then have an agent loaded with resources waiting to support their daily instruction.

As school districts build their AI strategy, the rapidly evolving Microsoft Copilot Chat and Microsoft 365 Copilot make a powerful and intuitive addition.

How to Use Microsoft Copilot Chat as a Resident Expert

The role of the IT department in a school district continues to evolve, and it is impossible to be an expert in everything. Microsoft Copilot Chat makes a great thought partner that can improve any initiative.

Before engaging in a conversation with AI, I’ve found it helpful to use Copilot to support my thinking. For example, I’ve prompted it to learn the content of files such as spreadsheets or Word documents. When discussing which software titles to renew, I’ve found that adding context like the actual cost of a title or usage analytics can lead to more personalized responses.

As I was familiarizing myself with Microsoft Copilot, our IT department was tasked with leading an initiative to evolve the district’s physical security systems. No one on our team had any substantive background in physical security. Instead of searching the internet for information, I began prompting my AI-powered thought partner. One prompting session led to the creation of a scalable, easy-to-understand naming convention to identify and locate devices inside our security infrastructure and throughout district buildings. It was a turning point for using AI in our department.

As time went on, members of the department kept Copilot open throughout the day on a separate screen, as a technician would to monitor email or a help desk system. Our frequent, intentional use of AI by the department kept it front of mind. It seems obvious to say, but you’ll gain the most from AI, including Copilot, by using it frequently.
