Review: Google Gemini Offers K–12 Educators Endless Possibilities

Google’s generative artificial assistant is a productivity booster, a time saver and a learning enhancer.

The introduction of Gemini, Google’s generative artificial intelligence tool, offers educators many opportunities to enhance their productivity via one of K–12’s most popular platforms, Google Workspace for Education. I have been using AI in my Spanish language and STEAM classes at Riverview School District in Oakmont, Pa., for several years. And I have been exploring the capabilities of Gemini on a personal and professional level ever since its release.

Google Gemini is a multimodal AI assistant designed to streamline workflows, enhance creativity, and provide valuable assistance to teachers and students.

It generates text, summarizes information, analyzes data, and even assists with creating images and codes and solving complex problems.

I regularly recommend Gemini to educators looking to supplement their traditional classroom tools and methods and use generative AI in meaningful and impactful ways.

Because of its seamless integration with other widely used Google tools, such as Docs and Slides, teachers can easily get started with Gemini and integrate it into their daily workflows.

How Teachers and Students Can Use Gemini

Teachers can use Gemini to plan lessons, create supplemental student resources and offer suggestions for student support. With guidance and at appropriate ages, students can use the technology for research assistance, personalized tutoring and creative brainstorming.

Gemini Saves Time in Lesson Planning and Curriculum Design

Gemini can generate detailed lesson plans based on state standards, ISTE guidelines, specific grade-level requirements or other key focus areas. I have also used it to generate practice exercises, brainstorm new ideas and receive feedback on instructional materials.

For example, when designing a lesson on narrating in the past tense, I prompted Gemini to generate some examples, a worksheet, discussion questions and several fun project ideas for them. The AI provided everything I asked for within a minute.

With Gemini, tasks that used to take hours now may take only minutes. We can transfer that time saved into working directly with students.

Gemini Enhances Student Engagement and Personalized Learning

One of Gemini’s standout features is how it can tailor content to learners’ needs. If a student needs additional support in understanding fractions, for example, Gemini can provide step-by-step explanations, real-world applications and interactive quizzes.

Advanced students can use it to create more challenging enrichment activities to deepen their understanding of content. Teachers can use Gemini to create reading passages at various Lexile levels, which helps to ensure accessibility for every learner.

How Easy Is it for Schools to Adopt Gemini?

Gemini excels as a personal assistant that is available at any time to help busy teachers efficiently manage their workloads. It can schedule assignments, generate slide presentations from lesson outlines and provide instant responses to students’ FAQs. If a teacher needs to prepare a lesson on AI ethics but has only 10 minutes to spare, Gemini can generate a comprehensive guide with discussion prompts and real-world examples.

In my experience, schools that have implemented one-to-one Chromebook programs and already use Google Workspace find it easy to integrate Gemini into their workflows.

Gemini offers a user-friendly entry into AI-powered teaching, and those districts still in the early stages of digital transformation can maximize its potential with professional development.
