Transforming Higher Education for the Hybrid Future

Hybrid learning is here to stay, and virtual reality and esports are among the tools that are gaining popularity as higher ed adjusts to this new landscape.

While the early days of the pandemic forced higher education institutions to go virtual, students and staff aren’t quite ready to give up some of the newfound benefits they’ve discovered in remote learning. A Permanent Shift to Hybrid Learning

Even as most universities have returned to in-person learning, many are continuing to expand their remote learning options. According to Cengage’s Digital Learning Pulse Survey, 68 percent of students and 57 percent of faculty said they would prefer a hybrid learning option post-pandemic. University administrators, IT departments and other staff also have a growing interest in hybrid models, with nearly 70 percent of respondents in the EDUCAUSE QuickPoll saying they would like a remote option.

The success of online education and lessons learned from the past two years have led to new opportunities and greater reception to new technologies in higher ed. These new capabilities have led to increased collaboration between higher ed IT and faculty.

“COVID has been a forcing function, and faculty are open-minded to working with IT in a way they haven’t been previously,” writes Cengage CIO Jim Chilton. “In a rapid shift, senior administration sees digital learning as integral to the future of higher ed; this blending of technology in the classroom is now expected."

With the growing popularity of esports — currently, there are more than 100 higher ed esports programs — universities are looking to improve the campus competitive gaming experience to boost student recruitment and retention.
