Review: Enabling Remote Learning with the Logitech C920 HD Pro Webcam

For those who want a higher-quality camera option for videoconferencing and remote learning, this webcam offers a quick and simple solution.

For educators, collaboration technology has never been more critical than it is now, with recent events forcing many to adopt remote working and online learning. Particularly vital among higher education instructors is online videoconferencing. Logitech’s C920 webcam is an affordable, high-quality and accessible addition to any laptop or desktop computer setup.

The Logitech C920 Webcam is Adjustable, Automatic and Simple

With its quick and easy USB setup, this is a great option for both classroom instruction and administrative use. Automatic detection and driver installation for the device take just a few seconds and, yes, the C920 is compatible with both Mac and Windows. It also works with a variety of videoconferencing and video recording software, including Zoom, Skype, Camtasia, Webex and FaceTime — no additional software required.

This camera is well suited for on-the-road use, should your laptop lack its own camera. The C920 is highly adjustable and can be used atop your monitor or on a small desktop tripod. Logitech offers optional Windows and Mac software that can provide multicamera support, controls for camera scanning frequency and some other small user experience enhancements that you can download from Logitech’s support website.

You Get Solid Quality Audio with the Logitech C920

Considering its built-in microphone, the C920 delivers solid audio quality. While a device this small (it’s less than 4 inches wide) with fixed omnidirectional microphones can’t compete with larger professional-quality devices that have unidirectional microphones, it performs well under average classroom conditions. It does include automatic noise-cancellation, which helps if you are using it in an open space.

Because the C920 does not have speakers, you will need to use the built-in speakers on your device, buy stand-alone accessory speakers or use a headset. If you record your discussions or conferences and worry about audio fidelity, you might want to purchase a separate USB microphone.

Logitech C920 Offers Good Value at an Affordable Cost

Logitech makes a full range of webcams, with some costing three times what the C920 costs. This model isn’t the least expensive, but because it comes in under $100, it’s still affordable for most. A newer model, the C920s,  is similar in price and also includes a lens cover for privacy. There is also the C922x model, which sells for a little more and is geared toward those with high-quality livestreaming needs. It comes with dual stereo mics and includes a six-month license for the XSplit video editing software.
