Virginia District Gives Its Teachers Their Own Ed Tech Conference

Professional development is key to helping teachers succeed, particularly when it comes to providing support to help them effectively integrate new classroom technologies. The Newport News Public Schools district recognized that its teachers often lacked the time and resources to attend professional conferences, so it decided to give them their own. Each year, the NNPS Technology Department hosts the iNNovate Technology Conference, an end-of-summer event organized with teachers' input that pays year-round dividends.

Video Highlights

  • In its third year, the NNPS iNNovate conference offers more than 100 sessions led by technology coaches, instructional coaches and teachers, open to all teachers, staff and administrators.
  • The Innovation Station gives teachers an opportunity to learn about several new types of technologies that they may want to incorporate in their classrooms, including robots, green screens and virtual reality headsets.
  • The relationships developed at the conference start the school year on a note of connection and collaboration that continues throughout the year.
