CoSN2021: How Students Feel About Their Remote Learning Experience

When the pandemic hit in February and March last year, many schools had little room to develop meaningful alternative learning plans or models. This meant students and educators were thrust into a great unknown as school districts attempted to cobble together a valuable virtual learning model with no notice and few resources. Over time, districts improved and iterated on their remote learning setups, and some districts began bringing students back into school, resulting in hybrid learning environments.

We spoke with three students to gain insight into their experiences on what it was like to ride the remote learning roller coaster and how it has shaped their view of virtual instruction going forward.

Video Highlights

  • For many students, the remote learning experience saw significant improvement over time when they compared how their schools responded at the beginning of the pandemic with remote learning now.
  • The social-emotional connections that are key parts of the in-school experience were hard to recreate and sorely missed, but remote learning did give students a meaningful sense of independence and autonomy.
  • Overall, the experience of learning in the midst of a pandemic has enlightened many students on the benefits of deep technology integration in the learning environment, which will shape how they view school going forward.
