In the federal government, many who feed scanners as part of their jobs must go through extensive training before they are allowed to become scanner technicians. Schools may not have that luxury, so the Canon imageFORMULA DR-C225 II Office document scanner comes packed with automatic features to help correct both technical and human errors.

Using a range of media, I tested the scanner in a variety of ways to see if it could correct common mistakes and problems without requiring human intervention.

Most of the error-correcting features of the scanner are automatic. For example, it has an ultrasonic double-feed detection system that halts operations instead of producing a bad scan. It also knows to skip blank pages instead of adding them to the digital record. If someone loads five documents and one of the pages in the middle is blank, the scanner will simply skip it when generating output instead of producing a blank record in the output repository.

It is also smart enough to automatically detect whether a document is printed in color or black and white, as well as the size of the page. And if a user does not specifically choose a resolution, it will pick a good one that is a balance between accuracy and size, or whatever default is programmed into the scanner software.

Automatic features that prevent bad scans include duplexing (which prevents bleed-through), shadow cropping, text enhancement and 3D color correction, among others.

Users only need to know how to put documents into the scanner; the Canon DR-C225 does all the heavy computation and color correction on the back end. This will make any user seem like an experienced scanner technician, with no training required.
