Education IT Weak to Cyberattacks, Mobile Management [#Infographic]

The sector had more issues with virtual machine security than any other in a international survey spanning five industries.

A new survey shows confidence among education IT leaders is low when it comes to defending against cyberattacks and managing mobile devices.

The report from technology analysts at IDG Connect for ForeScout, titled "State of IT Cyber Defense Maturity," offers a snapshot of the confidence levels of IT management across several countries in five industries: manufacturing, healthcare, retail, education and finance.

The report reflects survey responses of 1,596 senior IT security and technology leaders. Some 96 percent of those surveyed reported they had experienced at least one significant security incident in the past year.

The largest areas of vulnerability they listed include malware as well as application and wireless security. But the report also takes the pulse of respondents’ confidence in the likelihood of improving these weaknesses. Only 33 percent said they were very confident that these security vulnerabilities could be improved, while 13 percent stated they were not confident.

Top 5 Security Issues

  • Phishing
  • Compliance policy violations
  • Unsanctioned device use
  • Unsanctioned application use
  • Unauthorized data access

According to the report, the education sector struggled the most with managing the security of its virtual machines, an industry that has experienced massive growth.

The education industry appears to have more issues with virtual machine security (68 percent) and inventory management (65 percent) compared to industry aggregate (respectively 58 percent and 58 percent).

The survey’s education sector respondents also had the lowest level of confidence that security measures related to mobile device usage would be improved. A combined 73 percent of them said they were either not confident or only somewhat confident of this, according to the report.
