2015’s Top 5 Higher Ed Infosec Issues [#Infographic]

A group working with EDUCAUSE is creating strategies for better information security policies in higher education.

An EDUCAUSE infographic charts a course for a group intent on heightening IT security in higher education.

Higher education isn’t just a place to learn about cybersecurity — it’s a place to put solid digital defense practices into action. Penn State University learned that in May, after a massive cyberattack forced the institution to disconnect a large portion of its network from the Internet, according to Security Week.

The Higher Education Information Security Council (HEISC) was established in 2000, under the EDUCAUSE umbrella, to help institutions improve information security governance, compliance, data protection and privacy programs.

Earlier this year, the group released an infographic that includes the top five strategic information security issues for 2015:

  1. Developing an effective information security strategy that responds to institutional organization and culture and that elevates information security concerns to institutional leadership.
  2. Ensuring that members of the institutional community (students, faculty, and staff) receive information security education and training.
  3. Developing security policies for mobile, cloud, and digital resources (includes issues of data handling/protection, access control, and end-user awareness).
  4. Using risk-management methodologies to identify and address information security priorities.
  5. Developing, testing, and refining incident response capabilities to respond to information systems/data breaches.
